Residential staircases: design that doesn't compromise on safety
Types of residential staircases, comfort measurements for tread and riser, guardrail and lighting: what EZA considers to combine design and safety.

A good staircase is the one you go up and down every day without thinking about it. In high-end homes, the residential staircase has become a centerpiece: it shows up in the living room, gets exposed concrete and glass. But no beautiful design makes up for an uncomfortable step or a flimsy handrail. After more than 35 years building in Criciúma, we have learned that a staircase is resolved in the architectural design, not on-site. Here are the most commonly used types, the comfort dimensions and the details that matter.
Types of residential staircases: concrete, metal or mixed
The concrete staircase is the most common in the houses we build. Cast in place or precast, it is solid, does not creak, does not vibrate and accepts any finish: porcelain tile, wood or exposed concrete itself. The point to watch is the schedule: it requires formwork, reinforcement and shoring together with the structure of the house.
The steel one is lighter and spans wider gaps with a slender structure. It arrives from the metalwork shop almost ready and assembles quickly, which helps a lot in an expansion. On the other hand, it requires well-executed anti-corrosion treatment and a design that controls vibration and footstep noise. The mixed ones combine both worlds: a steel structure with wooden steps, a high-end classic.
The cost of comfort: flooring and mirror
There is a century-old formula that still holds, Blondel's: twice the riser height plus the tread depth should be between 63 and 64 cm. In practice, risers of 16 to 18 cm with treads of 28 to 32 cm result in a staircase that the body handles well.
As important as the measurement is the regularity. The body memorizes the rhythm of the steps in the first few paces. A step half a centimeter higher in the middle of the flight is where someone trips. In width, 90 cm works, but 1.10 m or more changes the experience: two people can pass each other and the sofa goes up without drama.
Guardrail: protection that also shapes the staircase
A guardrail is not an accessory, it is a safety item governed by code. The usual minimum height in a residence is around 1.05 m, and many projects adopt 1.10 m. And there is a simple rule we always check: no opening may let an 11 cm sphere pass through, a measure designed so a small child cannot fit through.
For glass, the right choice is laminated glass, which holds the shards together and stays standing if a pane breaks. Horizontal steel cables look nice, but they turn into a ladder for children to climb, so we assess this case by case. And the handrail needs to be continuous and firm, with a cross-section the hand can wrap around completely.
Open spans and cantilevered steps call for careful judgment
A staircase with open risers lets the light pass through and gives lightness to the space, which is why it appears so often in contemporary design. The care needed is the same as with the guardrail: the gap between one step and the next should not allow an 11 cm sphere to pass through when there are children at home. A discreet profile solves it without killing the design.
A cantilevered step, one that comes straight out of the wall as if floating, is one of the most beautiful effects there is. It is also one of the most demanding in terms of engineering: each embedded step requires structural calculation, properly sized fixing and a wall prepared for the load. It is not a detail to improvise on site. And on any staircase, the floor needs real grip: waxed wood and polished porcelain tile on a step are an invitation to slip, the subject of our text on high-end finishes.
The right lighting prevents falls
A good share of stair accidents happen at night, so lighting is a matter of design, not improvisation. The basics: a two-way switch at the bottom and at the top, so you never cross the stairs in the dark. Then, LED step lights on the treads or the baseboard and a presence sensor for the early hours.
The light needs to mark the nosing of the step without dazzling whoever is going down; a strong beam straight on hinders as much as darkness. When the design allows, natural light over the stairs, through a skylight or a glass panel, transforms the circulation during the day.
When the staircase becomes the sculpture of the house
In high-end homes, the staircase is no longer just a passageway and has become the main gesture of the living room. Exposed concrete, wood and steel take center stage, often in a double-height space where the staircase is the first thing your eyes meet. It is a piece that unites structure and finish, which is why engineering and architecture must talk to each other from the very first sketch.
We lived through this at Casa Bloco, a project EZA built in Criciúma with a design by ES Arquitetura, internationally awarded, where exposed concrete and reclaimed wood set the tone. In our projects, design coordination and VR visualization help the client understand every detail before it leaves the drawing board.
A staircase is structure, circulation and furniture all at once. When design and safety are thought out together, from the project stage, it becomes one of the highlights of the residence instead of a headache. For more than 35 years EZA Engenharia has been building high-end houses in Criciúma and the region with in-house engineering, from design to execution. Frequently asked questions
What is the ideal tread and riser measurement for a residential staircase?
The reference is Blondel's formula: twice the riser plus the tread should be between 63 and 64 cm. In general, risers of 16 to 18 cm with treads of 28 to 32 cm are comfortable. More important than the exact measurement is keeping all the steps in the flight equal; irregularity is what makes people trip.
Is an open-riser staircase safe for children?
It can be, as long as the gap between the steps does not allow an 11 cm sphere to pass through, the same rule as the guardrail. A discreet profile or barrier between the steps solves it. Continuous guardrail and handrail remain mandatory.
Concrete or steel staircase: which to choose?
It depends on the project and the stage of the work. Concrete is solid, quiet and accepts any finish, but it must be executed together with the structure. A steel structure assembles quickly, spans larger openings and works well in an expansion, as long as the project controls vibration and noise.
